Here below is the working thesis for my essay 2 paper.
Cell phones have been around for almost 90 years. The use of cell phones have changed since they first came out. Before we only used cell phones for simple emergency calls that were short and brief. Today we use our cell phone for texting, long calls, and surfing the internet as a form of communication. Cell phone companies are making a fortune off the new technologies coming out. The audience the cell phone tends to attract are young adults ranging from 16 to 30, though lately research has shown that people in the workforce have upgraded to a more complex phone such as the blackberry. The way we communicate with people has changed so much over the years. We use abbreviations when we talk to each other on such discourse communities as facebook, and myspace. We use the same text styles when we text message one another as well. The cell phone has become such a necessary part of many people’s lives but we haven’t thought about the “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” aspects of this technology. I believe the cell phone is partly all of these things.

HI Lauren,
ReplyDeleteLIke I said before, I really liked your topic about cell phones. In today's society, the aspects of cell technology have become "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." So this is your thesis statement, right? Boy,you will have plenty of information to write in each category. In the good paragraph did you mean long distance calls and not long calls? Yes, you will have fun with this. Good luck/
Lauren-
ReplyDeleteI think cell phone technology is a great topic. I really like how you are thinking about text language - abbreviations, etc. What you'll need to do is narrow the topic a bit. Looking at cell phones in general is a pretty big project. Could you focus on a segment of cell phone users - teens, work force members, seniors - and think about how cell phones uniquely reflect their discourse community? For example, why do teens have to have new versions of phones so often?
This is a great start. Just keep working to narrow your topic a bit and then keep thinking about language and building community.

Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI agree! You have an awesome subject. I myself cant live without my cell phone. Its always next to me! LOL! But most of the time I use it to text. Your intro sounds pretty good. Its informative and gets the point across on how cell phones can be addicting.
Good luck
